Watercolor and Plastic!

Here are some beautiful and fun techniques to try with watercolors and plastic wrap. Instant texture!

Both were painted using lots of colors. The bottom painting was worked into with colored pencil to add shapes and emphasize the lines created by the wrinkling of the plastic wrap. This technique is a favorite in my painting classes! Hope you're inspired!

MATISSE AND HIS GOLD FISH

This spring, several of my classes created these beautiful paintings inspired by Henri Mastisse. Here is the lesson for you to try.
Can be adapted for any age group

Look at the paintings of Matisse. He painted the indoor surroundings in his apartment in Paris many times. That included his bowl of goldfish.
Time:              1 to 2 one hour classes
Visuals:           Examples of art work by Matisse.
Materials:      12 x 18 white paper with some weight such as drawing or construction
Pencils
Oil pastels (or crayons)
Sharpie markers (for drawing on foil)
White glue
Scissors
Aluminum foil (4” x 8”)
Line drawings or pictures of fish
Step One:      Draw fish on foil, allowing the marker to dry before touching.  Add lots of patterns and colors to your fish. Cut it out and put it off to the side.
Step Two:       Next, holding the large white paper the tall way, draw the shape of your goldfish bowl in pencil. Will it be short or tall?  Draw it so the sides are close to the edge of your paper. Use oil pastels and outline the bowl and color the water inside. Draw details in the background such as a table, patterned wallpaper, a picture on a wall, or a chair. Use complimentary colors next to each other (blue and orange, red and green, or purple and yellow).
Step Three:  Arrange all the fish inside the bowl finding the places they fit best. Create a sense of balance that is not necessarily symmetrical.  One way you can do this is by placing the large fish on one side balanced by two smaller ones on the opposite side.  When you are pleased with your arrangement  pick up each piece of foil and add dots of glue to the outer edges.
Think of a title for your picture. Write this on  the back of your artwork.
The most beautiful thing we can experience
is the mysterious.                        Albert Einstein

A Visit to the Museum

A great thing to do on these cold winter days is to visit an art museum...to take in the many colors, varied lines, hundreds of subjects, ideas and ways artists work and respond to their environment. The Rhode Island School of Design Museum in Providence was bustling with people looking and even taking notes on what they were seeing when I visited yesterday. Van Gogh, Martin, Monet, Cassatt, Soto, Rothko, Frankenthaler and Pollock are just some of the many artists works found in this beautiful jewel of a museum. We even heard a live classical concert echoing through the museums hallways and galleries. Check it out for a worthwhile way to spend a  winter's afternoon!

Image File for Inspiration

And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
Anais Nin

From time to time I will post ways to keep you inspired .......with ideas, pictures and words so that when you hit a dry spell in coming up with a creative project you will have a file of different ideas to get jump started again.
So one that I find really helpful is to make an Image File.
  •  Tear out pictures from magazines
  • Make copies from books or the internet
  • Save a card, menu, program, map or anything that attracts you and that you love.
Keep these papers in a file or huge envelope. Post some of them on a board that you hang in your creative space. You can continually add to this file. Let me know if you have any other ideas to add to the image file.
