This week: BIRDS!

Now that the colder weather is here, a lot of my students tell me they have bird feeders in their back yards so what better subject this week than to draw and paint birds. We started by looking at line drawings of birds found in New England then each student chose their favorite one. Using a pencil we created contour drawings. With black paint we went over every line and then added details: feathers, eyes, and beaks. Finally adding color with oil pastels gave our birds their finishing touches and a lot of contrast. Pretty  awesome!

Art History and Artists

Offering art history lessons and an art project inspired by these artists is my favorite way to teach. When I research these time periods and artists and read about the way an artist creates I find it  fascinating,  Going to a museum is an incredible way to learn about art and experience it first hand. We have one of the best art museums in the country at the  Rhode Island School of Design Museum in Providence. Hmmmm....maybe a trip soon?
The world is but a canvas to the imagination.

KID'S ART NOVEMBER 8!

I am looking forward to teaching a 5 week session at Steere Farm Elementary in Harrisville, RI starting Wednesday November 8! I'll be introducing new techniques and materials. In my search for great art supplies I found some beautiful oil pastel colors and interesting speckled drawing paper. Sometimes the materials inspire my lessons and things just take off from there. Other times it might be a painting or an artist that stirs my imagination and opens up the creative experience to new possibilities.  So we'll be drawing animals, both real and imaginary, painting landscapes and learning about color and design. Hope you can join us!

Please let me know soon if your child would like to join the class. It is sponsored by Burrillville Parks and Recreation and as always it is open to kids who live in other towns also.

Matisse's Rooms

This work was created as part of a year and a half long journey across the art history time line. The class looked at the art of the ancient Egyptians through to the 20th century. Inspired by these works, students learned to create with many different mediums including watercolor, charcoal, pastel, and clay. These are collages of each child's room in the style of Henri Matisse.
