Image File for Inspiration

And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
Anais Nin

From time to time I will post ways to keep you inspired .......with ideas, pictures and words so that when you hit a dry spell in coming up with a creative project you will have a file of different ideas to get jump started again.
So one that I find really helpful is to make an Image File.
  •  Tear out pictures from magazines
  • Make copies from books or the internet
  • Save a card, menu, program, map or anything that attracts you and that you love.
Keep these papers in a file or huge envelope. Post some of them on a board that you hang in your creative space. You can continually add to this file. Let me know if you have any other ideas to add to the image file.

Perspective: How To Draw a Birdhouse

Drawing objects in one point perspective can be tricky at first. Once you learn the basics it can be a lot of fun. It's all about connecting lines to points and drawing lines that are parallel to each other. You will need:
  • 8 1/2 x 11 inch copy paper
  • Ruler
  • Pencil and eraser
  1. Make a dot not far from the right hand corner of your paper
  2. Draw a rectangle in the middle of the paper. Draw a triangle on the top of the rectangle.
  3. With the ruler, connect points 1,2, and 3 to the dot that is your vanishing point (VP). So you are connecting the two side corners of the rectangle and the top of the triangle with the dot. You will have three lines drawn to the dot.
  4. Draw a line parallel to the right side of the rectangle about 1 to 2 inches away.
  5. Draw a line parallel to the top line of the triangle from point A to point B.
  6. Now you can shade the side and roof and you are done.
Hope you can try this!

This week: BIRDS!

Now that the colder weather is here, a lot of my students tell me they have bird feeders in their back yards so what better subject this week than to draw and paint birds. We started by looking at line drawings of birds found in New England then each student chose their favorite one. Using a pencil we created contour drawings. With black paint we went over every line and then added details: feathers, eyes, and beaks. Finally adding color with oil pastels gave our birds their finishing touches and a lot of contrast. Pretty  awesome!

Art History and Artists

Offering art history lessons and an art project inspired by these artists is my favorite way to teach. When I research these time periods and artists and read about the way an artist creates I find it  fascinating,  Going to a museum is an incredible way to learn about art and experience it first hand. We have one of the best art museums in the country at the  Rhode Island School of Design Museum in Providence. Hmmmm....maybe a trip soon?
